Hardik Pandya may not play in IPL 2019: Details here
Indian cricket team star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Australia. India play two T20Is and five ODIs against the Aussies ahead of the Indian Premier League. Pandya, who is suffering from a stiff back, is not even sure of participating in the 12th edition of the T20 league. Here's more.
Pandya to undergo conditioning work at the NCA
The BCCI decided to hand a rest to Pandya in order to help him undergo strength and conditioning work for his lower back stiffness. Pandya will begin his fitness regime at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from next week. As far as his participation in the IPL is concerned, sources told Hindustan Times that it is too early to take a decision.
Decision to be taken after fitness test
"Too early to speak about that (IPL participation) at present. He has a stiff back and it is not like he is carrying any injury. After the three weeks of training at the NCA, he will once again undergo a fitness test," the source said.
Main priority is to keep Pandya ready for World Cup
The BCCI medical team's main priority is to ensure Pandya gets 100% fit for the ICC World Cup 2019, which starts from May 30 onwards in England and Wales. Pandya is one of the most important members of India's Playing XI and if the management thinks he needs ample rest before the World Cup, then it won't hesitate to make him miss the IPL.
Big blow for Mumbai Indians if Pandya gets ruled out
If Pandya is ruled out of the IPL, then this will be a big blow for his franchise Mumbai Indians. The 25-year-old is one of their prized assets and he had a strong campaign last season when MI finished fifth. MI will be following the situation closely. Even if he passes the test, the medical team will still monitor his workload in IPL 2019.
Pandya hasn't played much cricket in recent times
Pandya suffered a back spasm against Pakistan during the Asia Cup 2018 in UAE in September. Pandya missed the remainder of the Asia Cup and then sat out of the full-fledged series against West Indies. He also missed the T20I and Test series against Australia. Pandya was suspended ahead of the ODIs against Australia for sexist comments on a television chat show.
Pandya needs valuable time in the middle
Pandya made his impact felt after returning to the fold for three ODIs against New Zealand. He picked up four wickets and also showed his value with the bat. Pandya also featured in the three-match T20I series against the Kiwis. He needs to get valuable time in the middle to be World Cup ready and missing the series against Australia is a big setback.
One hopes Pandya is fit to play IPL: Our take
Fans will hope that Pandya gets fit to play the IPL. His participation could help him perform in England during the World Cup. If he misses the IPL, he might be rusty in the 10-member tournament and India can't afford it, given their fragile middle-order.
