Will Delhi Capitals retain the talented Jake Fraser-McGurk? Ponting answers
Ricky Ponting, the legendary Australian cricketer and former head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC), has expressed his belief that the franchise may retain young Australian batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. The 22-year-old right-handed top-order batsman made a significant impact in his debut IPL season this year. He entered the roster after replacing Lungi Ngidi and managed to score an impressive 330 runs at a strike-rate of over 230.
Ponting praises Fraser-McGurk's dedication to cricket
During a commentary stint for Sony Sports during the 2nd T20I between England and Australia, Ponting was asked about Fraser-McGurk's performance in the IPL. He responded by saying, "It's a good question because I haven't actually seen much of him since the IPL. I love working with him and coaching him. He's a great kid." Ponting further emphasized that Fraser-McGurk is not yet the finished product but has shown immense potential.
Ponting predicts bright future for Fraser-McGurk
Ponting also predicted a prosperous future for the young cricketer, stating that "There's every chance that the Delhi Capitals will offer him a retention. He's going to make a lot of money really quickly early in his career." Despite his impressive IPL performance, Fraser-McGurk had a nominal start to his T20I career. However, he bounced back by scoring 50 runs off just 31 balls in the 2nd T20I against England.
His sensational run in IPL 2024
Playing his maiden IPL season, Fraser-McGurk became a household name with his sensational performances. He finished the season with 330 runs across nine games at a jaw-dropping strike-rate of 234.04. During the season, he also became the only batter with multiple IPL fifties in 15 balls or fewer. A major chunk of Fraser-McGurk's runs came in the powerplay overs. He smashed 266 runs from 106 balls at an incredible strike rate of 250.94 in the Powerplay.
