West Indies vs England, Test series: Statistical preview
West Indies and England are set to lock in the three-match Test series, starting March 8. Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Kensington Oval, and National Cricket Stadium will host the three games. The hosts beat England 3-2 in the five-match T20I series in January. Notably, the two sides last met in 2020 when WI won the Test series 2-1. Here is the statistical preview.
Here is the head-to-head record
The two sides have met on 160 occasions in Test cricket, with West Indies winning 58 of them. While England have won 51, a total of 51 have been drawn. Interestingly, West Indies have lost three of the last four Tests to England. The Caribbeans last won a Test series against England in January 2019 (won the three-Test series 2-1).
England yet to win a series in WI since 2004
England have not won a Test series in West Indies since March 2004 (won 3-0). Meanwhile, West Indies won in 2009, 2015, and 2019. West Indies lead the head-to-head series between the two teams at home 27-15. As many as 29 matches have been drawn.
First series post the COVID-19-enforced break
In 2020, West Indies visited England for a three-match Test series. It was the first series following the COVID-19-enforced break. West Indies won the first Test after chasing 200 at The Rose Bowl. However, England bounced back in the following two Tests to win the series. Ben Stokes starred with his all-round show (363 runs and nine wickets).
A special double for Stokes
Stokes led England in the first Test (2020). Although England lost the match, he achieved a special feat. He achieved the double of 4,000 runs and 150 wickets in Test cricket. Stokes (64) became the second-fastest to the landmark after West Indian maestro Sir Garry Sobers (63). The list also includes Sir Ian Botham, Jacques Kallis, Kapil Dev, and Daniel Vettori.
Records that can be scripted
England Test captain Joe Root requires 400 more to complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He will become just the second England batter to reach this landmark. Stokes is set to complete 5,000 runs in Test cricket (4,867). He also has 167 wickets in the format. On the other hand, WI all-rounder Jason Holder is 12 away from reaching 150 Test wickets.
