Barbados Test, Day 4: WI bowled out; England extend lead
West Indies were bowled out for 411 on Day 4 of the 2nd Test against England at the Kensington Oval, Barbados. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite shone with a marathon knock (160 off 489 balls). Meanwhile, the England openers survived before stumps. England, who batted 15 overs, now lead by 136 runs. They finished on 40/0 at stumps. Here is Day 4 report.
How did Day 4 pan out?
West Indies resumed from their overnight score of 288/4 on Day 4. Alzarri Joseph departed after sharing a crucial stand with Brathwaite. Wicket-keeper Joshua Da Silva also hung around for a while, taking WI past the 400-run mark. England left-arm spinner Jack Leach ended up bowling as many as 69.5 overs. Alex Lees and Zak Crawley blunted the WI seamers in the final session.
A captain's knock!
WI captain Kraigg Brathwaite earned praise for his marathon knock in the first innings. He had scored his 10th Test century on Day 3. Brathwaite played a captain's knock after the hosts were in a spot of bother. He went on to bat on Day 4 too, registering his second score of 150 or more. Brathwaite finished on 160 off 489 balls (17 fours).
Most balls faced by a WI batter since 2004
Brathwaite has now faced the most balls by a West Indian batter in Test cricket since Brian Lara's record-breaking 400* in 2004. Lara played a total of 582 balls in that innings. Incidentally, his knock also came against England.
England bowlers toiled hard
England bowlers toiled hard for two days. Leach was the pick of their bowlers, having taken three wickets for 118 runs. He had an economy rate of 1.70 after bowling 69.5 overs. Ben Stokes and Saqib Mahmood snapped up two wickets apiece. Meanwhile, Chris Woakes, Matthew Fisher, and Daniel Lawrence picked a solitary wicket each. Skipper Joe Root too chipped in with six overs.
