Indian cricketers lack county experience
Modern day cricketers lack the experience of county cricket. Barring Cheteshwar Pujara, none of the players from the current squad have played much county cricket. County cricket helps cricketers gain valuable experience overseas. Earlier the off-season was used to gain valuable overseas experience, today cricketers opt for lucrative T20 leagues rather building their technique with county cricket.
India do not have Test specialists
Except Cheteshwar Pujara, India do not have cricketers who are specialists for Test cricket. Ever since the departure of Dravid and Laxman, Indian middle order has lacked consistency. Due to the jam-packed limited overs schedule and the lucrative T20 leagues, most crickets do not have the time for first-class cricket. BCCI needs to emphasize on producing Test specialist batsmen in the future.
Kohli is the lone warrior overseas
Over the last few years, Virat Kohli has been carrying the load of sparing India's blushes overseas. Ajinkya Rahane has been the only other Indian justifying his selection with a commendable batting average overseas. Apart from these two, Indian batsmen have found it difficult to cope with the swing and bounce in pitches away from the subcontinent.
Indian team is heavily reliant on Ashwin
Ashwin has been India's prime bowler over the last 3 years. The spinner has been Kohli's go-to man in times of trouble. But considering India played most of their cricket in the subcontinent, where pitches aid spin, Ashwin could work his wonders. But on tracks that are pace friendly overseas, Ashwin's threat is reduced to half.
India lack quality seam bowlers

For the number one Test team in the world, India's top-ranked pacer is Mohammed Shami who is currently ranked 17, followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who is placed at 22. BCCI has been money minded
The BCCI is keen on making more profits and India are playing too much of limited overs cricket, which doesn't give our stars a break to play in any other league. While foreign players play in the IPL, Indian cricketers are not given the NOC by the BCCI to play in any other league, thus denying them valuable overseas experience.
