Kohli wants Indian pacers to skip IPL for World Cup
The next edition of the Indian Premier League and the 2019 ICC World Cup have just a 10-day gap between them, and Virat Kohli is worried that the bowlers might not get enough rest. That's why, he has put forward his view that pacers of Team India should be rested for the IPL, this term. Kohli has, however, no such worries about Indian batsmen.
The schedule of the IPL and World Cup
The ICC Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be held from May 30 to July 14, 2019. While the dates of the IPL have not yet been announced, the mega carnival might happen from March 29 to May 19.
Kohli, Sharma and others met with the CoA
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, head coach Ravi Shastri, and chief selector of the Indian team MSK Prasad met with the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). In this meeting, Kohli put forward his suggestion and said that BCCI should compensate these bowlers when they stay away from the IPL. However, the meeting was about India's poor performance in away tours.
The request could cause problems for IPL franchises
The CoA has taken no concrete decision on Kohli's request, as they said the IPL franchises need to be consulted about this suggestion at first. Mumbai and SRH will have the most to lose if such a decision is taken because they will be losing JB and Bhuvi. IPL Chief Operating Officer, Hemang Amin, has said that the decision will be taken if needed.
Our views: My captain, why only bowlers?
While Kohli has a point in saying that pacers would be needing rest, a question inevitably arises that why did they not make such claims about batsmen? Notably, Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rahane, the three members of the team who were present at the meeting, are all batsmen. No bowler bowls more than 24 deliveries in T20s, and they had no representation.
But, what about the England tour?
The meeting was held to discuss India's poor show in away tours, especially against England. But, instead of this, the discussion revolved around the IPL and World Cup. We are yet to know what they said about the poor performance in the England Test series.
