Meet Richard Madley, the IPL auctioneer
While all eyes are on the players and franchises during the IPL auctions, we tend to forget the man in the middle of all the action. For the last 10 editions, Richard Madley has been the auctioneer and is set to return, as 578 cricketers prepare to go under the hammer. But who is this man, with a fine British accent?
The man who auctions cricket's biggest players
Richard Madley is the man who brings the event to life and he does it in some style. A second generation auctioneer, Richard, hails from Wales and has played Surrey Cricket League. Madley began his career in 1978 with Phillips Son and Neale auction house in New Bond Street. He started off as a salesman and had to work up the ranks.
Madley is one of the best in the business
As an auctioneer, your job takes you across the globe hosting several auctions. After 20 years with Phillips Son and Neale, Madley took the big leap and joined Christie as President of Christie's East, New York. This is where he started auctioning sports memorabilia. He has raised thousands of dollars for sporting charities, sold several memorabilia and countless artwork.
Madley is Lalit Modi's find
Madley was first invited to host the IPL auctions by former IPL boss, Lalit Modi. The tobacco tycoon may no longer be associated with the BCCI but Madley has remained the auctioneer since the inaugural edition. From paintings and artwork, Madley now sells the biggest cricketers across the globe, truly a remarkable journey.
