IPL: Meet Vignesh Puthur, MI spinner who shone on debut
What's the story
Kerala's promising left-arm wrist-spinner Vignesh Puthur shone on his IPL debut, playing for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings in their 2025 season opener.
Although MI lost while defending 155, Puthur grabbed eyeballs by taking three wickets.
The 24-year-old was brought in as an Impact Player, who justified his selection by sending CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad back in his first over.
He went on to dismiss Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda, returning with 3/32 at Chepauk.
Performance
Puthur takes three wickets against CSK
Puthur's debut performance against CSK has underscored his potential as a key player. He chipped in when MI missed Jasprit Bumrah (injury) and Hardik Pandya (one-match ban).
Puthur struck when CSK were cruising at 78/1 in what looked a comfortable run-chase. He dismissed Gaikwad, Dube, and Hooda, which created panic in the CSK camp.
Although MI lost eventually, the franchise will be keenly watching Puthur's progress throughout the season.
Career path
Journey from local leagues to IPL
Hailing from Malappuram, Kerala, Puthur was picked by MI for a base price of ₹30 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Despite his young age, he has already made a mark in local cricket.
As per Sportstar, he started off bowling medium pace before switching to leg-spin under local cricketer Mohammed Sherif.
He has played in several leagues including the Kerala Cricket League and Tamil Nadu Premier League.
Breakthrough
Puthur yet to play for Kerala senior side
According to Sportstar, Puthur's stellar performances for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club caught the attention of Alleppey Ripples selectors, a Kerala Cricket League (KCL) side.
The exposure eventually saw him being picked by Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
It is worth noting that Puthur hasn't played for the Kerala senior side yet. However, his early career has been nothing short of remarkable and promising.
