#GamingBytes: All about the winners of Golden Joystick Awards
As we near the end of 2018, the award season is upon us to honor the best performing games of the year. We reported the games to watch out for, in the upcoming 'The Game Awards', where a lot of new content for the upcoming years is outlined by developers. However, recently the prestigious Golden Joystick Awards announced the winners. Read about it here.
History of Golden Joystick Awards
Also known as the People's Gaming Awards, 2018 marked the 36th anniversary of the Golden Joystick Awards, making it the second oldest ceremony after Arcade Awards. Earlier, voting was carried out by British public, but it has now been made online and open for everyone. It was initially limited to computer games, later expanding to console games as their popularity increased in the UK.
Sign of the times at the award ceremony
It is a good thing that the Golden Joystick Awards expanded to include console games, as the 2018 ceremony saw 'God of War' by Sony Santa Monica, only playable on PS4, picking up a large number of awards.
Time to meet all the winners
God of War performed the best, winning Best Storytelling, Audio, Visual Design and PlayStation Game of the Year awards. Monster Hunter: World won Best Cooperative game, Dead Cells got Best Indie Game while Overwatch won Best eSports Game. PUBG Mobile won in mobile category, Forza Horizon 4 won it for Xbox, Subnautica for PC. Critics chose Red Dead Redemption 2 as the Best Game.
The ultimate Victory Royale
Fortnite was the voters' favorite, winning the prestigious Competitive Game of the Year and the Best Game of the Year awards. It shows the popularity of Epic's Battle Royale. Being free to play besides having exciting, new content helped it edge past serious competition like Red Dead Redemption 2 to win the ultimate prize. This signals the popularity of Battle Royales within the community.
