Chris Gayle returns to West Indies ODI squad
After a gap of more than two years, Chris Gayle has finally been included in the ODI team of West Indies. He last played in the 50-over format in March 2015. Marlon Samuels also made a comeback in the team for the upcoming ODI series against Ireland and England. West Indies are currently playing a 3-match test series against England.
Relaxation in rules by the WICB
The inclusion of Gayle and Samuels in the ODI team came after the West Indies Cricket Board made changes in its selection policy. Earlier, it was mandatory for a player to play domestic tournaments to be eligible for a place in the national team. This rule, however, was criticized by many players and was eventually dropped by the board in July of this year.
The squad
Jason Holder (C), Sunil Ambris, Miguel Cummins, Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Devendra Bishoo, Kyle Hope, Jason Mohammed, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Ashley Nurse, Jerome Taylor, Kesrick Williams.
WI to play one ODI against Ireland, five against England
After the test series against England is over, West Indies will play one ODI against Ireland on 15th September. The ODI will be followed one off T20 match against England, with WI ending the England tour with a five-match ODI series, starting 19th September. The last ODI match will be played on 29th September at Southampton.
Narine to play domestic cricket now?
Off-spinner Sunil Narine declined to be considered for selection, and has said that he would like to play domestic Super50 tournament before he makes an international comeback. Darren Bravo, who was recovering from a hamstring injury, said that he could return only next year.
