West Indies beat Pakistan: Here are the records broken
West Indies thrashed lacklustre Pakistan in match number two of the ICC World Cup 2019 on Friday. The Windies produced sheer hostility with short balls to dismiss Sarfaraz Ahmed's side for just 105. Oshane Thomas was the star performer. The Windies then chased down the target. Here are the records broken.
Pakistan script some unwanted records
This was the second lowest total in World Cup history for Pakistan. Their lowest is 74/10 against England at Adelaide in the 1992 edition of the World Cup. This was the second-least overs managed by Pakistan in terms of being all-out in ODIs. They were all-out in 21.4 overs. Their lowest is 19.5 versus West Indies in 1993 (Cape Town).
Pakistan script second lowest ODI total at Trent Bridge
This was the second lowest team total in ODIs at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. West Indies beat Pakistan for the eight time in a World Cup match out of 11 meetings. This was also their 71st win in ODIs against Pakistan and a second successive victory in the World Cup. Seven Pakistani batsmen were dismissed being caught out today.
Thomas, Holder shine for Windies
Oshane Thomas (4/27) excelled on World Cup debut. The young fast bowler is now the highest wicket-taker for WI in ODIs this year (13). Jason Holder (3/42) now has 124 ODI wickets for Windies.
Gayle notches a host of records
Chris Gayle struck his third fifty in 2019. The veteran southpaw also amassed his fifth World Cup fifty. He went past a host of batsmen in terms of runs scored in the World Cup that included former Aussie star Matthew Hayden (987). Gayle is now the third highest run-scorer for WI in the World Cup. He also struck his 52nd career ODI fifty.
Gayle breaks the world record for most World Cup sixes
Gayle (50) completed 19,000 runs in international cricket. He is now the third Windies player to do so. Gayle now has 40 sixes in the World Cup, which is a world record. He went past AB de Villiers (37). This was his consecutive 50-plus score in ODIs. Gayle now has 96 fours in the World Cup and needs four more to reach three figures.
How did the match pan out?
Pakistan lost Imam-ul-Haq early, before Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam played some strong shots. Andre Russell picked two wickets and that changed the game. Pakistan never managed to move on after losing wickets. A cameo by Wahab Riaz saw them get past 100. In reply, WI got off to a flier, before Pakistan got two wickets. Gayle batted sensibly to help Windies win.
