Mirabai Chanu requests Sports Ministry to install CCTV cameras
Commonwealth Games gold medalist and current weightlifting world champion Mirabai Chanu has put in a request to the Sports Ministry to install CCTV cameras in her room at the national camp. The weightlifting ace fears her food could be spiked to drag her into a doping scandal and bring an end to her reign as the world champion. Here's more about this report!
IWF backs Mirabai Chanu's demands
The 23-year-old has been subjected to 45 dope tests in the last 4 years but has never been found guilty of any wrongdoing. Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has also requested the Sports Ministry to install cameras at locations like the training areas and dining halls and other places, where the weightlifters come in contact with outsiders.
IWF is worried about the safety of their weightlifters
"We have written to the Sports Authority of India and Sports Ministry to install CCTV cameras at the national camp at NIS Patiala so that we can know what is happening there. We don't want any doping case from our weightlifters," IWF Secretary-General Yadav said.
IWF claims Sports Ministry has agreed to its demands
Yadav said the Sports Ministry has assured him that cameras will be installed at the training hall by next month. National coach Vijay Sharma, who has written letters to the Ministry, claims that in the past, two weightlifters were worried that their food was spiked. Wrestler Narsingh Yadav too was dragged into a doping controversy before the Rio games and couldn't prove his innocence.
