What did we witness in sports this week?
In this last week, we saw some of the best sporting moments of the year. Pakistan cricket team won the Champions Trophy for the first time, while India's Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian man to win the Indonesian Open Super Series. Let us have a look at some of these moments from all over the sporting world in detail.
Pakistan win maiden Champions Trophy
Pakistan defeated India to win the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, their maiden title. Putting an all-round performance, Pakistan won the match by 180 runs to register the biggest victory in ICC tournament finals. With the World Cup win in 1992 and the World T20 title in 2009, Pakistan now have won all the ICC trophies. Hasan Ali was awarded 'Player of the Tournament'.
Kidambi Srikanth wins Indonesia Open
Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian man to win the Indonesian Open Super Series 2017 after defeating Japan's Kazumasa Sakai. Srikanth won the match 21-11, 21-19. Sakai had defeated India's H S Prannoy in the semi-finals to reach the finals of the tournament. It was Kidambi's second final of the year after the Singapore Open, where he had lost to Sai Praneeth.
India march ahead in the Hockey World League Semi-finals
With three wins from four games, India hockey team reached the quarter-finals of the 2016-17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals. India defeated Pakistan by a huge margin of 7-1, before losing to Netherlands 3-1. They will now face Malaysia in the quarter-finals on 22nd June. With five goals from five matches, India's Akashdeep Singh is the third highest goal-scorer of the ongoing tournament.
Anil Kumble resigns as India coach
Putting an end to all the speculations, Anil Kumble resigned as the coach of the Indian cricket team on 20 June and will not accompany the team for the West Indies tour. Kumble said that Kohli's 'reservations' about him made him quit.
Confederation Cup - Germany, Russia win their respective matches
Germany, Chile and Russia won their respective matches in the ongoing Confederation Cup in Russia. Germany defeated Australia, Chile won against Cameroon while Russia registered a victory against New Zealand. Portugal's match against Mexico ended in a 2-2 draw. Russia are set to meet Portugal, while New Zealand will be against Mexico in Group A matches on 21st June.
Cricket, badminton and hockey
Indian women's cricket team will start their campaign in the Women's Cricket World Cup on 24th June against hosts England. The WC is scheduled to go on till 23rd July. Men's hockey team is participating in the Hockey World League, while the Indian shuttlers have already started their campaign in the ongoing 2017 Australian Super Series in Sydney.
