Rooney got his third in the 65th minute as Real Salt Lake ended the game with nine men. Lucas Rodriguez and Ulises Segura were the other goal-scorers for United. The side recorded 22 efforts on goal against Real Salt Lake.

Rooney's impact for DC United has been solid since he joined the club last year. DC United were bottom when Rooney came in June 2018. He was quickly appointed as the captain after just three games. The versatile player scored 12 goals and made seven assists last season as United sealed a play-off spot with a game to spare. They were knocked out thereafter.
