Steve Waugh not sure if Kohli's side is the best
Former Australia skipper, Steve Waugh has stated that he isn't sure if the current team led by Virat Kohli is better than the previous Indian sides. This comes months after Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri had claimed that this team has been the best in business. Waugh had his say on both Kohli's India and coach Shastri.
Waugh had played against some great Indian sides
In an interview to ESPN Cricinfo, Waugh stated that he had played against some great Indian teams during his time and isn't sure about the present bunch. "Look I have played against some great Indian sides and I am not sure that the current side is better than the ones we played against," Waugh said.
'Shastri's comments puts extra pressure on the team'
Waugh felt that Shastri should not have made such claims. "I am not really sure but probably not a great thing to say as it puts extra pressure on the team. Once they start losing, they will get a lot of criticism for that. Look, it's good that Ravi Shastri believes in his side but comments like these could be kept to himself."
Shastri had claimed Kohli-led side best in last 15-20 years
It was during India's tour of England this year, when head coach Ravi Shastri had lauded Virat Kohli-led Test side to be the best Indian team in the last 15-20 years. The comments had come after India lost another Test series away from home, against the Three Lions, in England. The coach had claimed the Kohli-led side has performed really well in overseas tours.
Shastri's comments in England
Shastri had said, "The endeavour is to travel well, compete and win. I can't see any other Indian team in the last 15-20 years that has had the same run in such a short time, and you have had some great players playing then."
Gavaskar, Dada had lashed out at Shastri
Shastri's comments didn't go well with Sunil Gavaskar. The former Indian skipper stated that teams in 1980s won abroad and then praised Rahul Dravid's team, which won Tests overseas in 2000s. Sourav Ganguly, who had led India to several memorable away victories laughed at Shastri and called him immature. He also added that these days nobody pays any attention to what Shastri says.
India have been dismal in away Tests in 2018
India have played 8 Tests away from home in 2018. The numbers do not read good for Kohli & Co., who lost 6 out of these 8 Test matches against South Africa and England. Now they are set to face Australia next
