Wasim Jaffer's savage response to Vaughan's 2-tier Test cricket proposal
Former Indian cricketer, Wasim Jaffer, has responded to Michael Vaughan's recent proposal of dividing Test cricket into two tiers. Vaughan suggested the same considering the decline in viewership of the longest format and unequal distribution of funds among cricket boards. Jaffer humorously highlighted England's low ranking in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle while responding to Vaughan's idea.
Jaffer highlights England's recent rise in WTC rankings
Jaffer, taking a jibe at Vaughan, shared a screenshot of Team England languishing at the bottom of WTC table from a month ago, questioning the timing of Vaughan's tweet. He pointed out that Vaughan's proposal coincided with England's rise to fifth place in the WTC rankings. This improvement came after England secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-Test series against Sri Lanka.
Here's the banter between the two
"Test cricket needs to be 2 Divisions of 6 ASAP .. and spread the wealth of the game more evenly across all countries," Vaughan wrote on X after England beat Sri Lanka in the 2nd Test. Taking a dig at his tweet, Jaffer wrote, "Timing is everything. And Michael is a wise man who understands that. That's why he didn't tweet this a month ago when WTC table looked like this."
'Timing is everything,' writes Jaffer
England's performance in recent Test series
England's rise in the WTC rankings followed their victories over the West Indies and Sri Lanka. The hosts routed the Windies 3-0 in the three-match home series earlier this year. After defeating the Lankans by five wickets in Manchester, they secured a 190-run win at Lord's to seal the series. The third and final Test between England and Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place at the Kennington Oval from September 6.
