Virat Kohli opens up on Farokh Engineer-Anushka Sharma controversy
The cricketing fraternity got a shock when Farokh Engineer alleged the selectors had served tea to the Indian skipper Virat Kohli's wife Anushka Sharma during a World Cup match. For almost a month, Kohli didn't speak anything about this controversial statement. However, he has finally broken his silence as he defended Anushka. He said her value system won't allow her to do any wrong.
Engineer accused Anushka of getting preferential treatment from selectors
It was last month when Engineer made a comment about Anushka that she was seen getting preferential treatment from the selectors. He said she was spotted being served tea in the box during the 2019 ICC World Cup. While Anushka had cleared the air, Kohli too said that Anushka was seated in the family box and not the box of selectors.
Kohli says they don't interfere in each other's profession
Kohli brushed aside the allegations and said that Anushka is someone who has achieved success on her own and it is not her nature to break professional protocols. "When these things come out of protocols not being followed and rules being broken, it is not in her nature to do something like that because she understands my profession," said Kohli to India Today.
Kohli baffled with media stories targeting Anushka
"The value system that she has and her beliefs, and the nature she has, it won't allow her to go against rules and protocols. I don't know why people have wanted to sensationalize stories by taking her name because she's a soft target," he added.
Anushka has been at the receiving end for Kohli's underperformance
This is not the first time Anushka has been criticized for being with Kohli. She was criticized a few years back, during the 2015 World Cup, whenever Kohli underperformed. "When the lies are spoken so much all around, they start becoming truths. So, you need to speak up at some stage and that's exactly what happened recently," Kohli continued.
Kohli urges to keep Anushka's name away
Frustrated about the constant stories targeting his wife, Kohli has urged critics to keep her name away and instead talk alone about the selectors. "We are not people who would go out and start these debates but you have to put the truth out there - the way things actually are and the way they are perceived and accepted are very different," he concluded.
