Kohli, the highest run-scorer in the mega ICC tournament, will aim to continue his exploits. He is also the leading run-scorer in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), having slammed 500 runs. Here are his lesser-known records in the T20 World Cup.
Five more fifty-plus scores than any other player
Kohli has been brilliant for India in T20 World Cups. He is the highest run-scorer in the tournament with 1,141 runs from 27 games. Kohli is the only player with more than 10 fifty-plus scores in T20 World Cup history. He owns 14 half-centuries in this regard. Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma have nine such scores in the tournament.
An average of over 80
Kohli averages an astronomical 81.50, the highest in T20 World Cups among batters with over six appearances. Notably, no other player averages over 60 in this regard. Among Indians, Suryakumar Yadav follows Kohli with an average of 56.20.
Three fifties in T20 WC semis
Kohli is the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup knockout matches. He has racked up 288 runs from four matches at a strike rate of 152.38. Notably, Kohli has scored fifties in each of the four games (three in semis and one in final) and returned unbeaten twice. Marlon Samuels (215) and Jos Buttler (203) are the only other batters with 200-plus runs.
Other incredible records of Kohli
Kohli remains the only player with 250+ runs in multiple T20 World Cup editions (319 runs in 2014, 296 runs in 2022, and 273 runs in 2016). Notably, he averaged over 90 in each of these three editions, respectively (106.33, 98.66, and 136.50). Kohli's tally of 319 runs in 2014 remains the highest ever for a batter in a T20 WC edition.
Mind-boggling numbers against Pakistan
Kohli is the only player to have scored over 300 runs against Pakistan in T20 World Cups. Only one other batter has more than 170 runs in this regard (Shakib Al Hasan: 220 runs). Kohli's scores against Pakistan read 78*, 36*, 55*, 57, and 82*.
