#IndiaInEngland: Debutant Hanuma Vihari shows character
India have faced several issues in the ongoing Test series against England and were handed a 1-3 defeat by the hosts. But in the dead-rubber at the Oval, they will feel ecstatic about the performance by debutant Hanuma Vihari. He came out strong and looked at ease as he struck his maiden half-century in the first innings. Here we look at Vihari's performance.
Vihari grabs opportunity with both hands
Vihari was only called to the 18-man squad after the third Test match. After warming the bench at Southampton, he was selected in the starting line-up for the fifth Test. And the youngster grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Vihari, who replaced Hardik Pandya, battled for the visitors and scored a valiant 56. He looked comfortable during his stay at the crease.
Innings will give him confidence to go forward
Vihari played freely without taking any risks, but finally fell against Moeen Ali. His 56 runs helped India save the blushes after they were reeling at 160/6. He added 77 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja. Prior to that, he had also stitched a 51-run partnership with skipper Virat Kohli. The innings will give him a lot of confidence going forward.
Vihari a prospect for the series against Windies
He will hope to repeat the show with the bat, once again, in the second innings. India play a two-match Test series next against West Indies at home and that's when Vihari could be given an extended run to play in the middle order.
He has the character to succeed in Tests
Vihari has the elements to succeed in Test cricket. It is too early to say anything with conviction, but a fifty on English soil shows his character. He ran quick between the wickets and showed a solid defensive approach. Vihari will be eyeing to make it to the squad against Australia and consistent runs would help his cause.
