    What's the story

It's the final leg of the US Open 2017 and as it seems, we are braced for some spectacular matches.

While a 'Nadal-Federer' semi-final is very much a possibility in the men's singles category, Venus Williams, Pliskova are still fighting for the women's crown. However, Sharapova's run on her comeback came to an end.

Here, we give a round-up of all the matches.

    Who progressed?

Men's singles: Four players advance, big names feature today

12th seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta, Sam Querrey of the USA, Kevin Anderson of South Africa and Argentine Diego Schwartzman won their respective pre-quarter fixtures and progressed to the quarter-finals.

The big stars Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Juan Martin Del Porto, however, will play their round of 16 matches later today.

Bopanna and Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski, as well, progressed with a 6-3 6-4 win over María José Sánchez and Nicholas Monroe.

However, Paes and Purav Raja tasted defeat in the second round and crashed out of the tournament.

Sharapova crashes out, Williams, Kvitova progress

Sharapova, playing her first major after a 15-month hiatus, lost 7-5, 4-6, 2-6 to world number 17 Anastasija Sevastova, in yet another third setter.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams advanced to the quarters with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Petra Kvitova pulled off an unlikely 7-6 6-3 victory over favourite Garbine Muguruza to set up a quarter-final match with Williams.
