US Open daily round up
As we were all braced for an epic Nadal vs Federer in the US Open semi-final, Del Potro pulled off the biggest upset by defeating Federer. Nadal is now the clear favourite to win the US Open but Del Potro can mount a serious challenge to him. Meanwhile, women's No. 1 Pliskova crashed out in the quarters as well. Here is the daily round-up.
Nadal eases into semis
With every passing game, Rafael Nadal is becoming more and more ruthless. On Wednesday, the Spaniard was at his destructive best as he sent Russian teenager Andrey Rublev packing. While the 19-year-old gave his best, he was never able to match up to Nadal's exuberance. Nadal showed absolutely no mercy as he routed Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in just 93 minutes.
Federer crashes out of the US Open
Juan Martin Del Potro stunned Roger Federer in the quarter final match today to set up a semi final clash with Rafael Nadal. The 24th seed Argentine prevailed 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 over Federer, who has already won two Grand Slams this year. An out-of-sorts Federer looked no match to Del Potro, who later said he played his 'best match of the tournament'.
Pliskova ousted by Vandeweghe, 4 Americans in semis
Coco Vandeweghe of the USA knocked out world number one Karolina Pliskova in the quarters with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Madison Keys also eased past Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3, 6-3 thus completing the clean sweep for American women. For the first time in the history of the US Open, we have four American ladies playing in the semis.
