US Open: Daniil Medvedev storms past Cobolli, reaches fourth round
Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev reached the 2024 US Open fourth round after beating Italy's Flavio Cobolli. The Russian ace claimed a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win in the men's singles third round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, finished as the runner-up last year. He remains the only former champion, with both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic getting knocked out.
A look at match stats
Medvedev won a total of 104 points and 33 winners throughout the match. He served nine aces compared to Cobolli's two. Cobolli recorded 36 unforced errors and four double-faults.
Medvedev eyes maiden title in 2024
Medvedev started the year by reaching the Australian Open final. He lost the final to Jannik Sinner. The duo could have a potential clash in the US Open quarter-final. Notably, Medvedev also reached his second successive semi-finals at Wimbledon this year. Medvedev, who is yet to win an ATP title this season, has improved to a 38-13 record. He is 21-6 on hard courts.
Upsets don't really matter: Medvedev
"I said it before the match that for me the upsets don't really matter. The only thing [is when] the conditions are a bit tricky the favourites maybe have less margin than the other guys," said Medvedev after his US Open third-round match. "If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don't play good I can lose against anyone."
Medvedev set to face Nuno Borges
Medvedev will next face the unseeded Nuno Borges for a place in the US Open quarter-final. The former leads Borges 2-0 in the ATP head-to-head series. Notably, both these wins came this year.
