Djokovic, Williams sisters into third round of 2016 US Open
Rafael Nadal along with Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray won their respective matches, reaching the third round of the 2016 US Open. In the women's singles, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova have reached the third round. India's Leander Paes along with his Swiss partner Martina Hingis made a winning start in the mixed-doubles event.
The United States Open Tennis Championships
The United States Open Tennis Championship is one of the four Grand Slams of tennis which starts on the last Monday of August. First played in 1881, the US Open is a hard court tennis tournament. It takes place at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Novak Djokovic and Flavia Pennetta are the current men's and women's singles champions respectively.
Most US Open titles
In the open era, which started from 1968, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer have each won five men's singles titles. In the women's singles events, Chris Evert and Serena Williams have won six titles each.
US Open 2016 kicks off
The 136th edition of the US Open 2016 started off at New York on 29 August 2016. Novok Djokovic will be defending his men's singles title this year. The men's and women's singles winners will each receive $3.5 million. It will be the first time since 2005 that five-time champion Roger Federer won't participate in the US Open.
Arthur Ashe Stadium gets new retractable roof
The US Open's largest venue, Arthur Ashe Stadium got a new retractable roof worth $150 million to prevent the cancellation of matches due to rain. The roof was closed for the first time on day four of the tournament. Andy Murray who played under the closed roof said that the closed stadium was noisy but athletes would get used to it.
Nadal, Simona get used to the roof
Rafael Nadal, who played his second round match in the closed stadium said that even though it was louder, he loved the noise of New York's crowd. Simona Halep commented that she does not have to wait for rain so that was a good thing.
