US Open: Djokovic vs Tsonga, Wawrinka vs Potro in quarters
Novak Djokovic is set for a quarter-finals clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France at the 2016 US Open. In other draws, Stan Wawrinka will face Juan Martin Del Potro and Britain's Andy Murray will have to face Japan's Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals. It will be an all French quarter finals match when Lucas Pouille, who beat Rafael Nadal, will face Gael Monfils.
Nadal's surprise exit in round four
Two time U.S. Open champion Rafael Nadal was knocked out by France's Lucas Pouille in the fourth round of the tournament. The 22 year-old beat the Spaniard 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(8-6) in a four hour long battle. He will now face Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals. Lucas's previous best was reaching the quarter-finals in the Australia Open and French Open in 2015.
I am not done yet: Nadal
It was the first time since 2004 that Rafael Nadal did not reach a Grand Slam quarter-finals. But the 30-year old said that he is not yet done. He added that he was close to being 100% again and believes that he can play more.
Top seeds cruise into quarterfinals
Stan Wawrinka cruised into the quarter-finals of the US Open, defeating Illya Marchenko 6-4, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3. World number 1 Novak Djokovic won his match in straight sets against Kyle Edmund. Britain's Andy Murray also had an easy win against his opponent, reaching the quarterfinals. Juan Martin Del Potro entered the quarter-finals after his opponent retired due to a knee injury.
Serena cruises ahead, Venus out
While her younger sister Serena reached another quarter-final round of the US open, Venus Williams was handed a defeat by Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova. World number 2 Angelique Kerber won against 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Petra Kvitova to reach the quarter-finals. Caroline Wozniacki and Anastasija Sevastova won their respective matches and will face each other in the quarter-final round.
308th win for Serena
Serena Williams made history by winning her fourth round match making it her 308th major draw win. She left behind Federer (307) and Martina Navratilova (306) to become the player with most wins in Grand Slams. She will now face Simona Halep in the quarter-finals.
Sania Mirza through to quarter-finals
Sania Mirza, along with her Czech Republic partner Barbora Strycova defeated the US-Japanese pair of Nicole Gibbs and Nao Hibino to reach the quarter-finals in the women's doubles event. The Indo-Czech pair won 6-4, 7-5 and will now face France's Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic.
