Having scripted numerous records, playing for Spanish giants Barcelona, along with record five Ballon d'Or titles, he has cemented his legacy as one of the sport's greats.
However, do we know all the records he holds?
Here, we take a look at some of his unknown records.
91 goals (2012)
He had scored 91 goals in a year
The year 2012 was magical for Messi, as he had scored an insane amount of goals within the calendar year.
He had played a total of 69 games, for both club and country, as he went on to score 91 goals in the year, scoring at a rate of 1.32 goals per game, which also equates to a goal per 68 minutes.
Unreal performance!
Hat-tricks
He has the joint-most hat-tricks in UEFA Champions League
For a player like Messi's caliber, it is almost impossible that he would not be scoring multiple hat-tricks.
While he did so, he holds the record for the same during the UEFA Champions League.
So far, he has scored eight hat-tricks in the tournament, as he shares the record with his rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
The record is unlikely to be matched by another player.
One-season all-rounder
Scores and assists in every tournament in a season
It might sound easy, but to score and come up with assist during a particular tournament in a season is an uphill task, let alone a match.
On the same note, Messi holds a unique record, of being the only person to do so in history.
It happened during the 2011-12 season, across competitions, during which he scored 73 goals and delivered 29 assists.
Youngest Ballon d'Ors
He is the youngest to win three Ballon d'Ors
Messi was destined for success and he has been having so from a relatively younger age.
On the same note, he holds another unique record of being the youngest player to win three Ballon d'Or awards, at the age of 23.
Judging by the amount of competition in the sport, this record is not likely to be broken anytime soon.
Best player internationally
Has won the best player award in every international tournament
Messi might not have had enough success at the international level with Argentina.
However, he has proved that he is indeed one of the best in the world, with his sound performance.
