Mourinho feels United must spend to rejoin Europe's elite clubs
What's the story
Manchester United are off the pace in 2018-19 and their latest defeat to Juventus, on Tuesday, in the Champions League highlighted the gap that exists between the two clubs.
United lost 0-1 against the Italian giants and the scoreline tells only half the story.
United manager Jose Mourinho, who was candid in his interview, recommended that they must spend to rejoin Europe's elite clubs.
Opinion
Jose lays out Juve's example for United to follow
Juventus could have won the game by a much better margin for all the dominance they enjoyed.
United goal-keeper David de Gea produced the save of the season to deny Cristiano Ronaldo a goal, on his United return.
Jose highlighted that despite Juventus having world class players, they didn't settle and had hunger for more titles.
With this, he took a dig at United.
Quote
Juve are acquiring the best in the world
"They had [Gonzalo] Higuain, [Mario] Mandzukic, Dybala, they want more. They want Ronaldo. They had [Andrea] Barzagli, Chiellini, [Daniele] Rugani, they are not happy, they want more, they want Bonucci. And they go for the best players in the world," said Jose.
Desire
Jose feels Juve have the desire to seek more
Jose feels that the model of Juventus will produce success. They are always looking at the future.
"So big, big club with a big past but with also a big desire to have a big future and everything they put there to try to win, I don't say the Champions League, I think to win the treble, that's what they want."
Transfer
United had a dismal summer transfer window
United had a dismal transfer window in the summer and failed to land any of the desired defensive targets.
The club needed to spend the money in order to get the big names, but that didn't happen.
And defensively United have been short this season.
It is perplexing to see United like this, given they boasted of the second meanest defense in Premier League.
Balance
United need to find the right balance
United need to buy the right players and bolster the squad in several areas especially in attack and defense.
Wide men are also needed to add more firepower.
And not just that, the club also need to sell deadwood players.
Will the management pay heed to Jose's demands?
Can they find a balance and challenge Europe's elite?
United have a difficult road ahead.
