Four years of MS Dhoni's international retirement: His unbreakable records
MS Dhoni is among the veterans who revolutionized Indian cricket with his acclaimed Midas touch. The 43-year-old is the only captain to win each of the three limited-overs ICC trophies. August 15, 2024 marks four years of MSD's retirement from international cricket. He announced his retirement on social media, where he wrote, "From 1929 hrs, consider me as retired." Here are Dhoni's unbreakable records.
Three limted-overs ICC trophies as captain
Not many are destined to win each of the three limited-overs ICC trophies, that too while leading. In his maiden tournament as captain, Dhoni led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title (2007). In 2011, India won their second ODI World Cup title, under Dhoni. Two years later, Dhoni captained a rather young Team India to the Champions Trophy (2013) title.
200 ODIs as captain; over 100 wins
Dhoni's peculiar and uncanny outlook regarding the game puts him in an altogether different league. His astute and out-of-the-box captaincy continued to make headlines throughout his career. Dhoni played 200 ODIs as captain, the third-most for a player. He remains the only Indian captain with over 100 ODI wins. It will take decades for any other Indian captain to match Dhoni's incredible feats.
Over 10,000 international runs at number six or below
In a long-standing career, Dhoni smashed over 17,000 international runs. He played most of his innings batting in the lower middle order. Over five years after playing his last international, Dhoni still remains the only cricketer to touch the 10,000-run mark batting at number six or below across formats. He leads the tally with 10,628 runs, followed by Mark Boucher (9,365).
Finishing off in style!
Over the years, Dhoni earned a reputation of an audacious finisher. He continues to do so in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Notably, he has completed successful run-chases by hitting a six on over 20 different occasions across formats.
Miles ahead of other Indian wicket-keepers
Dhoni has 829 wicket-keeping dismissals to his name, the highest among Indians in international cricket. The next-best Indian wicket-keeper on this tally is Nayan Mongia, with 261 dismissals. His last international appearance was in 2001. Furthermore, Dhoni has affected the highest number of stumpings across formats (195). He also holds the record of producing the fastest-ever stumping in an international fixture (0.08 seconds).
