Europa League, Manchester United held by AC Milan: Records broken
Manchester United failed to get the job done against AC Milan in their Europa League round of 16 first leg clash at Old Trafford. Amad Diallo's goal looked enough for United to gain a victory but Simon Kjaer's near-post header saw Milan score in the 92nd minute. With an important away goal, Milan have the advantage ahead of the second leg. Here's more.
Milan hold lacklustre United at Old Trafford
Milan were the better side as United struggled to find momentum in majority of the first half. Milan were denied a goal when Franck Kessie's first-half volley was ruled out for handball. Harry Maguire missed a sitter after a Bruno Fernandes flick from a corner. Amad Diallo handed United the lead after coming on at half-time. Kjaer then got the important goal in injury-time.
Crucial stats registered in the match
Milan's goal ended a run of 503 minutes in which Man United hadn't conceded in all competitions. Milan are winless in their last eight away games against English sides in all European competition (D4 L4) since a 1-0 victory over United in February 2005. Milan's equalizer was the first UEFA Europa League goal Manchester United have ever conceded in the 90th minute or later.
Notable records for Diallo and Bruno Fernandes
As per Opta, Amad Diallo became the youngest non-British player to score for Manchester United in major European competition (18y 243d), netting with his first ever shot for the Red Devils. Bruno Fernandes has now been involved in more goals in all competitions than any other Premier League player since his Manchester United debut (56). He has scored 35 goals, besides assisting 21.
United could bow out of Europe
As per Opta, when failing to win the first leg at home, Manchester United have been eliminated from six of their last eight ties in European competition, most recently against Barcelona in the 2018-19 Champions League.
