UEFA has confirmed investigation against Paris Saint-Germain will resume
The UEFA has asked its financial unit to further investigate the accusations against Paris Saint-Germain. The investigation was stopped by the Club Financial Control Body's chief investigator, but shall be resumed once again. It is believed PSG did not conform to the Financial Fair Play when they had bought Neymar (€222 million) and Mbappe (€180 million) in the same transfer window.
What are the rules PSG might have flouted?
It is believed that PSG have not been true to the Financial Fair Play regulations. The regulations dictate that a club cannot spend more amount than what they earn, and if there are deficits, they should not be more than €30 million over a period of three years. If found guilty, the club might be barred from European competitions for a season or more.
Who are the owners of the club?
The club was bought in 2011 by Doha-based Qatar Sports Investments, and since they took over, PSG have been receiving huge sponsorship from Qatar-based companies. The club reportedly receives €120 million every year from Qatar Tourism Authority. Earlier, La Liga's President Javier Tebas had also accused PSG and Manchester City of receiving huge sponsorship from Qatari companies.
Why was the initial investigation stopped?
The investigation into PSG was stopped as, earlier, UEFA had said that the club's financial deviations were within acceptable range. Moreover, the acquisition of Mbappe was done by taking him on loan for a year and then paying the transfer amount this year. However, some members of the investigation team believed that the sponsors were paying huge amounts to show an inflated income.
