UEFA Champions League: Here're the records broken on match-day 6
The group stage of the 2018-19 Champions League came to an end last night, putting to rest speculations about group stage results. Some results last night were truly shocking, as Real Madrid managed to lose 0-3 at home and Manchester United lost to a clearly better Valencia. Here are the records broken.
Manchester United squander chance to top group, lose 2-1
Manchester United have yet again made life difficult for themselves by losing to Valencia and squandering away the chance to top their group. This was the eighth UCL meeting between the two sides and Valencia's first victory against United in the competition. Phil Jones is United's first UCL own goal scorer since he himself did so back in 2011 against Benfica.
Real Madrid thrashed 0-3 at home by CSKA Moscow
Since 2008-09 (vs Juventus), this is the first time Real Madrid have suffered both home and away defeats against the same team in the UCL group stage. This was also Madrid's first home defeat in a UCL group stage match since 2009, when they lost 2-3 to AC Milan. Further, this is Los Blancos' heaviest home defeat in any European competition ever.
Young Boys win against Juventus, match ends 2-1
In another shocking result, Italian champions Juventus were defeated 2-1 by the Swiss club Young Boys. Guillaume Hoarau of Young Boys has become the highest-scoring Frenchman in the current UCL season, netting in four goals. Dybala's goal has made him the only Juventus player since David Trezeguet to score four goals against the same opponent in a single UCL season.
Manchester City save match against Hoffenheim, win 2-1
Despite trailing initially, Manchester City managed to save the day thanks to a brace from Leroy Sane. In his 10 seasons as manager, Guardiola has helped his teams qualify as UCL group toppers for a whopping nine seasons. Since Olympiacos did in 2002-03, Hoffenheim are the first team to finish at the bottom of their UCL group despite scoring 10+ goals.
