Real Madrid enter Champions League Semis in a controversial win
Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick powered Real Madrid to a 4-2 (6-3 on aggregate) win against Bayern Munich in a controversial quarterfinal second leg, to reach the Champions League Semis. In a match marred by bad referee decisions, Bayern were left fuming. Their coach Carlo Ancelotti, said, "Arturo's (red) card was not a card and two goals from Cristiano were offside so clearly we aren't happy."
Ronaldo scores a record 100 UCL goals
After his home leg hat-trick Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 Champions League goals. In response to their win the Portuguese striker said, " To score six goals against a team like Bayern Munich isn't easy so we deserved to go through."
How did the match proceed?
Bayern started the match with a goal deficit (1-2) and needed at least two goals to progress. While they took lead after Lewandowski's penalty, Real Madrid responded with Ronaldo's equalizer. Sergio Ramos own goal gave Bayern a lifeline (3-3 agg), forcing extra time. Vidal's dubious red card reduced Bayern to 10 men and Ronaldo netted two more for Real. Asensio's goal sealed their victory.
A night of offside goals and wrong sending off
The match decisions made by the Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai and his team of assistants benefited the Madrid side and left the visiting side feeling "robbed". Vidal who was sent off for what seemed like a clean tackle said, "It is very tough when they steal a game from you like that...two offside goals (Ronaldo) and me wrongly sent off."
Foxes go down fighting against a clinical Atletico Madrid
Entering the quarter-final second leg with a 1-0 lead, Atletico Madrid came away with a 1-1 (2-1 aggregate) result against Leicester City and a Semis spot in the Champions League. Saul Niguez and Jamie Vardy scored for the Spanish and English sides respectively. While the dream run for the foxes came to an end, they earned great respect across Europe for their spirit.
