Priyam Garg thanks his father after getting U-19 captaincy
India's young gun Priyam Garg created headlines on Monday after being appointed the captain for Team India in the upcoming ICC U-19 World Cup 2020. While it is a dream come true for the promising 19-year-old batsman from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, he would be looking to shine like other successful U-19 Indian captains. Meanwhile, Garg thanked his father for everything. Here's more.
Garg credits father for doing all the hard work
Garg said that his father did all the hard work, from selling milk to driving school vans and loading goods, so that the former could get a good life. "He went through all that just to see me become a cricketer one day. He took me to Meerut and made sure that I got into a decent academy," Garg quoted to The Indian Express.
My father sacrificed a lot for me: Garg
"I was too small to understand what was happening [losing my mother], but as I grew up, there was a big hole, which has never been filled. My father and sisters took care of me, my father sacrificed a lot for me," added Garg.
Garg's father was relieved after getting assurance from Rahul Dravid
Garg's father Naresh narrated how he and his son used to travel in his van, while he picked up newspapers late at night and distributed it around the city, before dropping him at the ground. "One day, I met Rahul Dravid and he told me not to worry and that my son would go places. I was happy that day," he recalled.
Garg's coach urged him to focus on batting
Garg's coach Sanjay Rastogi said that while the former wanted to become a bowler, like Praveen Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he asked him to focus on his batting, since he was natural stroke-player. "I asked him to concentrate on his batting because he looked such a natural stroke-player. Just after a year of joining us, he was selected for the U-14 team," he voiced.
A look at Garg and his achievements
Garg led India's U-19 side during the tri-series in England in August this year. Under his leadership, the U-19 team emerged victorious in the tournament. He has played 12 First-Class matches that include 867 runs at an average of 66.69. He has two hundreds and five fifties. Garg has also scored 539 runs in 15 List A games that includes a century.
