Sri Lanka T20 League postponed indefinitely: Know why
Sri Lanka's T20 league has been postponed indefinitely until the country's new board is selected. The league was stated to be held next month. Lankan Premier League will get new dates as the interim board, appointed last month, called for a delay. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the same. Here are the latest updates.
SLC had seen its elections suspended
Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal had suspended elections for the cricket board, looming in crisis, in late May. Post this, Sports minister Faiszer Musthapha decided to appoint a competent interim board until the next elections, which would be held within six months. The crisis-ridden cricket board is in a state of misery and this has derailed the preparations for the T20 league.
The reason behind the elections being called off
A petition by former SLC secretary, Nishantha Ranatunga, stated that outgoing president Thilanga Sumathipala wasn't suitable for re-election. Sumathipala and Ranatunga were pitted against each other in the SLC elections. Sumathipala, who has been alleged to have links with gambling, was accused by Ranatunga of violating ICC rules. The court intervention too came in after four Lankans were allegedly involved in match-fixing.
What next for Lankan cricket?
The national team is currently involved in a Test series against South Africa. But the postponement of the T20 League has hit the board hard. They need to see the crisis off by holding an election first and take things forward from there.
