A look at some top records held by Tom Latham
New Zealand opener Tom Latham came up with a prolific performance as he struck his 11th Test century, during the second Test against England in Hamilton on Friday. With this century, he continued his prolonged dominance in the format, as he is also currently the third-highest run-scorer for the side in the series. Meanwhile, we take a look at some of his top records.
He struck the highest Test innings score in 2018
It was last year in December when Latham struck an unbeaten 264 against Sri Lanka, during the opening Test at Wellington, as the match ended in a draw. Meanwhile, in the process, Latham scored the highest innings score by a batsman in a Test innings for the year. Mushfiqur Rahim's unbeaten 219 against Zimbabwe was the second-highest individual score.
Highest Test score by an opener at Basin Reserve
While the score of 264* is Latham's highest Test score so far, he also holds another unique record, as the score is also the highest by an opener at the Basin Reserve ground. The previous best was of South Africa's Jackie McGlew (255*).
He scored the first-ever half-century in Day-Night Tests
In one of the unique records held by him, Latham became the first batsman to score a half-century in the first-ever Day-Night Test. He managed to score 50 in the opening innings, while he scored just 10 in the second, as Australia went on to win the match by three wickets.
He's the first Kiwi to carry his bat in ODIs
It was in October 2016, when during the tour of India, Latham struck an unbeaten 79 to steer New Zealand to 190 in the opening ODI at Dharamsala. In the process, he became the first Kiwi batsman to carry his bat in the format. Overall, he was the tenth batsman to do so in the format.
Joint most dismissals as wicket-keeper for Kiwis in an ODI
In another unique record, he holds the record of scripting the maximum dismissals as a wicket-keeper for New Zealand in an ODI. It was in January 2017 when during the opening ODI against Australia in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, he scripted five dismissals and shares the record for the same with Brendon McCullum, Adam Parore and Gareth Hopkins.
