Top five ODI clashes between India and Windies
Two-time champions India are scheduled to lock horns with Windies in the ICC World Cup 2019 on Thursday. With a rich history and rivalry between the sides, there have been numerous instances where these two teams have been involved in an intense battle, especially in the ODIs. In the same light, we have a look at the top ODI clashes between the sides.
India register first-ever ODI win on Caribbean soil
In 1983, India toured the Caribbean for a three-match ODI series, prior to World Cup. After losing the opening ODI, the second ODI saw India managing 282/5 as Kapil Dev scored a brisk 72. India easily defended the total, and it was Balwinder Singh Sandhu, along with others, who terrorized the Windies batsmen, as they registered a historic first-ever ODI win in Caribbean.
MS Dhoni helps India register a memorable win
In 2009, India toured Windies for a four-match series. After a win each, rain played a spoilsport in the third. Batting first, Windies could manage just 185, courtesy Ramnaresh Sarwan's 62. As India's target was revised to 159, following another rain break, Dinesh Karthik scored a fine 47. However, it was MS Dhoni, who ensured India scored 11 off the final over.
A historic win for Windies in India
India and Windies were involved in an intense seven-match ODI series in 2002 in India. With the seventh ODI being a decider, Marlon Samuels played a splendid knock of 108* as Windies posted 315/6. India looked confident of chasing the total down. However, it was Jermaine Lawson's brutal pace, as his 4/57 decimated Indian batting to hand Windies a historic 135-run win.
Windies steal a win under India's nose
One of the heart-breaking losses for India happened during 2006 in the second ODI at Jamaica. Windies posted a low total of 198/9, courtesy Sarwan's unbeaten 98. In reply, India went until the final over. With 11 required and Yuvraj Singh on the crease, he managed to bring the equation down to two off three, only to get bowled by Dwayne Bravo.
A historic win at the grandest stage
Windies, who were the cricket powerhouse back then, were the favorites to win the World Cup in 1983. However, India, playing the final for the first time, did not shine with the bat, and were bundled for mere 183. But, in reply, it was Kapil Dev's smart bowling that outplayed the Windies batsmen as India lifted the World Cup for the first time.
