He did so during the fifth ODI of South Africa's tour of India, featuring in his 126th ODI and playing the 123rd inning.
Notably, Amla surpassed Kohli's record of 136 innings for the top spot.
Overall, he owns 8,113 runs at 49.46, including 27 tons and 39 fifties in 181 ODIs.
