IPL 2025: Here's why LSG might not retain KL Rahul
KL Rahul, one of India's finest modern-era batters, has been experiencing a significant dip in his performance. His mixed campaign in the 2024 Indian Premier League has raised questions about his future with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The team management is reportedly considering releasing him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Let's take a look at the three reasons why LSG might part ways with Rahul.
Alleged discord with LSG owner
A potential rift between Rahul and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka could be a key factor in the decision to release him. This speculation was fueled by a viral video clip showing Goenka and Rahul in an intense discussion following LSG's 10-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Moreover, LSG acquired Rahul for a record Rs. 17 crore in 2022. Hence, his release would free up LSG's purse significantly.
Rahul's conservative approach and strike rate
Rahul's conservative approach to the game has been criticized, particularly when his teammates were playing aggressively. The LSG skipper finished IPL 2024 with 520 runs at 37.14. However, his strike rate of 136.13 was the lowest among players with 300-plus runs in the season. His opening partner for the majority of the season, Quinton de Kock also struck at just 134.4. Their intent at the top meant LSG were often off to a slow start
Rahul's leadership skills under scrutiny
Rahul's leadership abilities have also come under scrutiny. Under his captaincy, LSG failed to reach the playoffs in IPL 2024, a first since their debut in 2022. The team finished seventh on the table with an equal number of wins and losses (seven each). Their last six games saw them register just two wins. Rahul's rotation of bowlers was largely criticized in several games.
