Presenting batters with twin Test centuries at Lord's
England's batting talisman Joe Root rewrote the record books with twin centuries in the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's. The game saw him become the Englishmen with the most Test tons as he went past the three-figure mark for the 34th time. Seven of his hundreds have come at Lord's. Here are the batters with twin Test centuries at this venue.
George Headley - 106 and 107 vs England, 1939
Former West Indies legend George Headley was the first one to accomplish this feat. Batting at number three in the 1939 Lord's Test, he scored a brilliant 106 against hosts England as WI finished at 277. The batting legend made 107 in his second outing though the visitors were folded for 225. Headley's efforts went in vain as England recorded an eight-wicket win.
Graham Gooch - 333 and 123 vs India, 1990
Former England ace Graham Gooch hit six hundreds at Lord's and two of them came in the 1990 game against India. The opener dazzled with a 485-ball 333 in the first innings. He backed up his triple-century with another three-figure score. His quick-fire 113-ball 123 meant the Brits declared at 272/4 and later won by 247 runs.
Michael Vaughan - 103 and 101* vs WI, 2004
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan registered his name in the Lord's honors board twice in the 2004 game against West Indies. He was among the three centurions (103 off 154) in the first innings as England piled up 568. Vaughan made an unbeaten 145-ball 101 in his second outing as the Brits declare at 325/5d. England eventually recorded a 210-run triumph.
Joe Root - 143 and 103 vs SL, 2024
Root is the latest entrant on this list. The batting stalwart hit a 206-ball 143-run knock as England managed 427 while batting first. His second outing saw him score 103 off 121 balls as the English side finished at 251/10. The Lankans have been set a massive target of 483 runs. As mentioned, Root now has seven Test hundreds at Lord's.
