Argentina striker and five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Lionel Messi has extended his stay at Barcelona until 2021 after penning down a new contract. While the exact details of the new deal remain unclear, Spanish publication El Mundo has revealed some staggering numbers. Lionel Messi will earn €70 million a year in wages and it doesn't end there. €100 million compensation for tax fraud
Messi is arguably the best player in the world and can command a huge wage. But his €70 million a year in wages is around €1.35 million a week, double of what Ronaldo is paid by Real Madrid. The Argentine has also been given a signing bonus of €100 million as a compensation for the tax evasion incident.
€70 million a year and exclusive image rights
After losing Neymar to PSG, Barcelona seem desperate to keep hold of Messi and have also given the little magician an exclusive image rights. The total deal is estimated to be around €450 million with a massive release clause of €700 million. The contract runs until 2021 but with an option of extending it for a year more.
Leaving Cristiano Ronaldo far behind
Messi will be earning €5.8 million per month, €1.35 million per week, €192,857 per day, €8,035 per hour, €133 per minute and as you are reading this, Messi has made €2.2 per second. The only other footballer who comes close to Messi's wages is fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez who is paid €64 million each year in China.
