Everything you need to know about the Mohammed Shami controversy
The cricketing fraternity has been shaken up with the public spat between Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his wife Hasin Jahan. While Shami's wife has accused him of charges ranging from domestic abuse to having multiple affairs, to corruption, the cricketer has been consistently denying them all. We bring you the details of how the controversy has unfolded so far.
Initial allegations by Shami's wife
On March 7, Mohammed Shami's wife Hasin Jahan went public via Facebook against the pacer accusing him of adultery and domestic violence. While Shami denied the allegations calling it a conspiracy to defame him, he was charged by police of serious crimes based on Jahan's complaint. The public spat between them led to BCCI taking a cautious approach by holding up Shami's annual contract.
BCCI's ACU to probe Shami
Based on the audio recording of a telephonic conversation claimed to be between Shami and his wife, the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit was directed by the CoA (Committee of Administrators) to probe the match-fixing allegations. In the conversation, there was a mention of Shami "taking money from a Pakistani woman named Alishba at the insistence of a certain Mohammad Bhai, an England-based businessman."
Domestic violence allegations unlikely to affect Shami's contract
It has been learnt that the domestic abuse allegations levelled by Indian pacer Mohammed Shami's wife are unlikely to impact his cricket career. BCCI reportedly is only concerned with Shami's financial dealings with Mohammad Bhai and Alishba, which allegedly are dodgy in nature. Once the probe by BCCI absolves him of any wrongdoing in the matter, Shami will mostly be handed his contract.
How will this affect Shami's IPL career?
Shami who has been acquired via RTM by the Delhi Daredevils will have to await the report from BCCI's ACU with regards to his IPL future. IPL governing council stressed that Shami can continue playing in the IPL only if he is given a clean chit by the ACU and that it has nothing to do with his "private life."
Shami demands proper investigation
Having admitted that the relation with his wife has reached a point of no return, Shami has demanded the authorities (ACU, police) to investigate the matter properly as "there are many lives at stake here."
