Face masks, social distancing mandatory in second India-England Test
The spectators will have to wear face masks and maintain social distancing at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium for the second Test between India and England, starting February 13. On Monday, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) announced the protocols regarding the entry of 15,000 fans for the impending second Test match. Notably, 50 percent crowd attendance has been allowed for the second Test.
Spectators return to international cricket in India
The second of the four-Test series will mark the return of spectators in an international match in India after the COVID-19 outbreak forced a complete shutdown of sporting activities in March. Meanwhile, the first Test is being played in Chennai without spectators.
The TNCA informs about the protocols
The TNCA in a media release said, "Conditions to be adhered by the spectators during the second Test Match at MAC Stadium. Face mask, covering mouth and nose, is mandatory for entry into the stadium and maintain social distancing within the stadium premises." Notably, the media, which was barred entry for the opening Test, will be allowed to cover the second game.
Fans should refrain from racist behaviour
The authorities have also warned the fans to refrain from racist behavior, adding that strict action will be taken against anyone flouting the rules. Notably, the warning comes after a bunch of Indian players were on the receiving end of racial slurs during the recent tour of Australia. Cricket Australia and the International Cricket Council (ICC) later condemned the action of these fans.
Strict disciplinary action will be taken against those violating protocols
Mentioning the same, the statement added, "Spectators are cautioned not to indulge (in) or display racist, religious or political activities, foul/abusive/unruly language inside the stadium, that could disturb the game and such persons will be dealt with in accordance to the law." "Strict disciplinary action will be initiated by authorities against all persons violating COVID and security protocols."
The items that are prohibited for the second Test
Items such as binoculars, speakers, and musical instruments have been prohibited for the second Test. These include "bags, jholas, briefcases, radios, laser pointers, digital diaries, laptops, computers, tape recorders, recording devices, binoculars, remote-controlled devices, inflammable material, musical instruments, speakers, professional/video cameras among others".
England on top in the first Test
As far as the first Test is concerned, England have been on top throughout. After electing to bat, they racked up a mammoth 578 with the help of skipper Joe Root's astonishing double-hundred 218. India posted 337 in reply. Eventually, R Ashwin's six-for bowled out England on 178. India are reeling at 144/6 on Day 5 as England set the hosts a 420-run target.
