The Lankans successfully defended their targets in the final two games, with the series opener ending in a tie. Notably, India couldn't pick spinners Dunith Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay throughout the series. They lost 27 wickets to spin in the series, the most for a team.

As per ESPNcricinfo, India lost as many as 27 wickets to spin, the most by a team in a bilateral ODI series (four or less matches). As per Cricbuzz, India lost 22 wickets to spin against Pakistan in the 1996 five-ODI series in Toronto. Interestingly, India lost nine wickets each to spin in the three games in the Sri Lanka ODI series.
New Zealand: 26 wickets lost to Bangladesh spinners, 2010/11
Before the 3rd SL-India ODI, New Zealand jointly held the record (with Zimbabwe) for losing the most wickets to spin in a bilateral ODI series. The Kiwis lost 26 wickets in this regard as Bangladesh stunned them 4-0 in the five-ODI series at home (one match abdandoned). Shakib Al Hasan finished as the highest wicket-taker, having taken 11 scalps.
Zimbabwe: 26 wickets lost to Bangladesh spinners, 2010/11
Bangladesh repeated their exploits later that year against Zimbabwe in the home ODI series against Zimbabwe. The visitors once again succumbed to the Bangladesh spinners, having lost 26 wickets in this process. Bangladesh won the series 3-1 despite losing the series opener. Spinners Abdur Razzak (13) and Shakib (9) led the wickets column in the five-ODI series (one match abandoned).
Pakistan earlier held this record
As per ESPNcricinfo, Pakistan held the previous record for the most wickets taken by a team's spinners in a three-match ODI series. The Pakistan spinners scalped 21 wickets against Bangladesh in 2011.
