Bangladesh's new ODI skipper Tamim reveals his plans: Details here
Bangladesh's new ODI captain Tamim Iqbal feels it is impossible to reach the level of his predecessor Mashrafe Mortaza. Tamim was appointed Bangladesh's captain last week after Mortaza stepped down following a three-match series against Zimbabwe. He said the fans need to be patient and also revealed what he wants to achieve. Here's what Tamim had to say.
'It's tough to go to his level straight away'
Mashrafe was an inspirational leader and Tamim feels it will be difficult to match his level. "I am taking over from someone. It's tough to go to his level straight away. I know it very well. He led us for so many years. We achieved many things under him. It will be unfair if you expect me to go to his level," he said.
You have to keep patient, says Tamim
"You have to keep patient. Our fans also have to keep patient. I will try to do whatever it takes for the best interest of the team," Tamim told reporters in Dhaka in his first public interaction post being appointed as their skipper.
Mortaza was instrumental for Bangladesh as ODI captain
Mashrafe was superb for Bangladesh and his role in taking the team from being underachievers to a respected limited-overs side was a standout factor. He led Bangladesh to 50 wins in 88 matches, making him the country's most successful ODI captain. In 220 ODI matches for Bangladesh, Mortaza has claimed 270 scalps at an average of 32.93.
Performances the main factor for Tamim
Tamim highlighted he will not keep the captaincy if Bangladesh won't get desired results. "If in six months, one year or one-and-a-half years I cannot do anything for the team I will not keep the captaincy," he said. His fresh tenure as the ODI captain will start with a one-off match against Pakistan on April 1.
