T20 World Cup: Which side owns most match-wins?
The 2024 Men's ICC T20 World Cup is set to begin on June 1 in the Caribbean and USA. As many as 20 teams will take part in the expanded tournament, comprising four groups. Notably, Sri Lanka are the only side with over 30 T20 World Cup match-wins. Have a look at the sides with most wins in T20 World Cup history.
Sri Lanka: 32 wins
As mentioned, Sri Lanka are the only side to have won more than 30 matches in the T20 World Cup. They are also the only team to play over 50 matches in the tournament. The Lankans, who won the 2014 T20 World Cup, have 32 wins in 51 encounters as of now. They won one match through Super Over, against New Zealand in 2012.
India: 28 wins
India won the inaugural T20 World Cup edition in 2007 after beating Pakistan in a high-octane final. After 14 years, the Men in Blue have accumulated 28 match-wins in 44 matches. One of these wins came through the only Bowl Out in T20 WC history, against Pakistan in 2007. India, who also reached the final in 2014, have lost 15 matches.
Pakistan: 28 wins
India's arch-rivals Pakistan have also won 28 matches in T20 World Cup history. Of the 47 matches played in the tournament, the Men in Green have lost 19, which also includes the Bowl-Out defeat from 2007. Pakistan won the second T20 World Cup edition in 2009 after beating Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's. They were also the runners-up of the 2022 edition.
Australia: 25 wins
So far, Australia are the only side to have won 25 or more T20 World Cup matches. The Men in Yellow have won 25 of their 40 encounters, losing 15. Their win percentage of 62.50 is the best among sides to have played 10 or more games. Australia won the 2021 T20 World Cup after beating New Zealand in the final.
