T20 World Cup: A look at astounding records
The much-awaited ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be underway on June 1. Two-time champions West Indies and USA are co-hosting the tournament. Notably, West Indies are one of only two sides to have won multiple titles, the other being England. The high-profile ICC tournament that started in 2007 has seen some astounding records. Here are some of them.
6 sixes in an over; fastest fifty
The 2007 T20 World Cup encounter between India and England in Durban saw Yuvraj Singh smash six sixes in an over (off Stuart Broad). Yuvraj clobbered a 12-ball half-century before finishing with a 16-ball 58 (3 fours and 7 sixes). This remains the fastest fifty in T20 Internationals. Notably, both these records are unlikely to be broken in the future.
Highest-ever total in T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka posted 260/6 against Kenya in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the highest-ever team total in the competition's history. Overall, it is the fourth-highest team total in T20Is. The fact that SL crossed 250 in the inaugural edition in even more bizarre. Notably, England have the second-highest team score in T20 World Cups (230/8 vs South Africa in 2016) among Test-playing nations.
Incredible records of Chris Gayle
Universe Boss Chris Gayle remains the only batter to have slammed multiple centuries in the T20 World Cup. He owns two tons in the tournament. Gayle also holds the record for smashing the most sixes in a T20 World Cup match. He hit 11 maximums against England during his unbeaten 100-run knock in the 2016 event.
Only bowler with six-fer in T20 World Cup
Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis has the best bowling figures in a T20 World up game. He took 6/8 against Zimbabwe in the 2012 edition. No other bowler has a six-fer in the tournament. This also remains the most economical spell in T20 World Cup history. Notably, Mendis is also the only bowler to have multiple six-wicket hauls (2) in T20 Internationals.
