T20 World Cup: Most economical returns in a match
The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup is set to begin on June 1. It will be co-hosted by the West Indies and USA. Unlike the recently-concluded Indian Premier League, the impending event could see the domination of bowlers as the Caribbean pitches are slow and dry in nature. Have a look at the most economical returns by bowlers in the T20 World Cup.
Ajantha Mendis: 4-2-8-6 vs ZIM, 2012
Sri Lanka's mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis has the best bowling figures for a bowler in the T20 World Cup. He recorded figures worth 4-2-8-6 against Zimbabwe in the 2012 T20 World Cup Group C match. Mendis remains the only bowler with a six-fer in the tournament's history. SL scored 182/4 before bowling out Zimbabwe for 100.
Mahmudullah: 4-1-8-1 vs AFG, 2014
Hosts Bangladesh hammered Afghanistan in the 2014 T20 World Cup encounter at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. They successfully chased down 73 after bowling out the Afghans in 17.1 overs. Mahmudullah, who came in as a second-change bowler, conceded just eight runs in four overs, including a maiden. He also dismissed Shafiqullah, his only wicket of the match.
Wanindu Hasaranga: 4-1-8-3 vs UAE, 2022
Sri Lanka claimed a 79-run win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the GMHBA Stadium, Geelong, in 2022. The Lankans racked up 152/8 in 20 overs before bundling out UAE for 73. Star leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga decimated UAE's middle order by taking three wickets. The wrist-spinner conceded eight runs in four overs, including a maiden.
Hamid Hassan: 4-0-9-3 vs Namibia, 2021
Afghanistan's Hamid Hassan entered this elite list with his superb spell against Namibia in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Afghanistan secured a 62-run victory after defending 160 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The Afghan pacer took three wickets as Namibia were restricted to 98/9 in their run-chase. He gave away just nine runs in four overs.
