T20 World Cup: A look at highest team totals
The 2024 Men's ICC T20 World Cup is set to begin on June 1 in the Caribbean and USA. As many as 20 teams will take part in the expanded tournament, comprising four groups. Over the years, several teams have scripted history with record-breaking totals. Have a look at the sides with highest totals in T20 World Cup history.
260/6: Sri Lanka vs Kenya, 2007
Sri Lanka hold the record for posting the highest team total in T20 World Cup history. They smashed 260/6 against Kenya in the inaugural edition in 2007. Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene slammed half-centuries, while Jehan Mubarak hammered a 13-ball 46* eventually. The Lankans later bowled out Kenya for just 88. Notably, no other side has recorded a 250+ total in the tournament's history.
230/8: England vs South Africa, 2016
England are the only other side to score 230 or more in a T20 World Cup match. They chased down 230 against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium in 2016. This remains the highest successful run-chase in the tournament. Joe Root slammed a 44-ball 83, getting adjudged the Player of the Match. SA's 229/4 in the same match is the third-highest T20 WC total.
218/4: India vs England, 2007
The 2007 T20 World Cup encounter between India and England saw Yuvraj Singh smash 6 sixes in an over. Yuvraj scripted history, with England seamer Stuart Broad on the receiving end. Earlier, openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir added 136 runs as India racked up 218 in 20 overs. England also did well but finished with 200/6.
211/5: South Africa vs Scotland, 2009
South Africa's first 210+ total in the T20 World Cup came in 2009. They scored 211/5 against Scotland in the Group D encounter at The Oval. AB de Villiers was at his destructive best as he hammered a 34-ball 79* (5 fours and 6 sixes). The Proteas were later bundled out for a mere 81, with four SA bowlers taking two wickets apiece.
