What's the story

The much-awaited ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be underway on June 1 in the Caribbean and USA. Notably, West Indies are one of only two sides to have won multiple titles. Marlon Samuels starred for them in both finals. The high-profile ICC tournament that started in 2007 has seen some valiant knocks in the finals. Here are some of them.

Samuels

Marlon Samuels: 85* vs England, 2016 final

In 2016, WI's Marlon Samuels starred in T20 World Cup final against England title with an unbeaten 85-run knock. He smashed 9 fours and 2 sixes as the Caribbeans chased down 156 in the final over at Eden Gardens. However, his knock was overshadowed by Carlos Brathwaite's four consecutive sixes which sealed the deal for WI toward the end.

Marlon Samuels: 78 vs SL, 2012 final

Samuels was the lone warrior for WI in the 2012 T20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He hammered a 56-ball 78, guiding the tourists to a respectable total of 137/6. Notably, WI were down to 87/5 at one stage. SL were later bundled out for a mere 101 as WI won their maiden T20 World Cup title.

Williamson

Kane Williamson: 85 vs Australia, 2021 final

Kane Williamson bolstered New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup final against Australia in Dubai. The Kiwi batter smashed a 48-ball 85 (10 fours and 3 sixes), also the highest individual score as captain in a T20 World Cup final. Williamson's 85 drove New Zealand to 172/4. However, Australia chased it down in 18.5 overs to claim their maiden T20 WC title.

Marsh

Mitchell Marsh: 77* vs NZ, 2021 final

While Williamson slammed 85 for New Zealand, a 92-run partnership between David Warner and Mitchell Marsh outclassed the Kiwis. Warner departed for 50, and Marsh returned unbeaten for 77 off 50 balls (6 fours and 4 sixes). The latter later stitched a valuable partnership with Glenn Maxwell. Marsh was eventually adjudged the Player of the Match as Australia tasted glory.
