Sunil Gavaskar backs Jay Shah for ICC president role
Cricket legend and former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has backed Jay Shah to become the next president of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This endorsement comes amid speculation about Shah's potential candidacy for the prestigious position. In his recent column for Sportstar, Gavaskar dismissed rumors suggesting that Shah influenced the incumbent ICC president Greg Barclay's decision to step down from his post. Shah is currently serving the BCCI as the secretary.
Gavaskar dismisses rumors about Shah's influence
Gavaskar addressed rumors that Shah had a hand in Barclay's decision to step down. He wrote, "When Greg Barclay announced his decision not to go for a third term, which he was entitled to, there were reports in the media of the Old Powers that Barclay's decision had been forced by Shah." The cricket legend further questioned these allegations by asking what role other ICC representatives played if such coercion indeed took place.
Gavaskar criticizes 'old powers' in cricket administration
Gavaskar criticized the so-called "old powers" in cricket administration. He stated, "Their basis of criticism was only because they realized they won't be having power over the game anymore." The former Indian captain also questioned why these powers did not voice any objections earlier if they believed Shah had influenced Barclay's decision.
Gavaskar praises BCCI's administration under Shah
Gavaskar commended the strong bond between players and the BCCI, and that teamwork has taken Indian cricket to new heights. He stated, "The way Indian cricket has shaped up over the years is also a tribute to the BCCI and its administration." The former cricketer further emphasized that such teamwork is why Indian cricket is thriving today.
Will Jay Shah replace Barclay as ICC chairman?
Earlier this month, Greg Barclay, the incumbent ICC chairman, officially announced that he will step down from his position in November. Jay Shah, who became the BCCI secretary in 2019, is tipped as a potential successor to Barclay. Currently leading ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) subcommittee, Shah is considered one of cricket administration's most influential figures. He enjoys substantial support among the 16 voting members. If elected at age 35, he would become the youngest-ever ICC Chairman.
