Buttler has the potential to captain England: Andrew Strauss
England cricket team's director Andrew Strauss feels Jos Buttler has the potential to become the next skipper of the side. However, he clarified such a scenario would only arise if the 2019 World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan decides he doesn't want to carry on as the leader. Buttler, who is England's vice-captain, played a critical role in England's victory against New Zealand.
Morgan's captaincy has been an inspirational
Morgan has been a terrific leader for England in the last few years. Alongside coach Trevor Bayliss, the 32-year-old guided England to become the number one ranked ODI team. They backed the cricketers to play their natural game. Players were allowed to express themselves without thinking about the outcome. As a result, Morgan helped England win the World Cup by defeating New Zealand.
England gear up for Ashes, next ODI in February 2020
England now gear up for the Ashes under the leadership of Test skipper Joe Root. The Ashes begin from August 1 onwards. Post the Ashes, England face Kiwis in a five-match T20I series. Their next ODI is against South Africa in February 2020. Strauss has highlighted that it is up to Morgan to decide about his future.
Morgan has climbed Everest, it is his decision: Strauss
"The question for Morgan is what he wants to achieve here, because he has climbed Everest. He should be absolutely clear he wants to carry on, is just taking a bit of time to reflect where he is at," said Strauss to ICC's official website.
Strauss had backed Morgan and wants him to carry on
It was Strauss, who had backed Morgan to continue as captain after England's debacle in 2015 World Cup. And he helped the Three Lions to resurrect their status in ODIs. Strauss wants Morgan to continue as the leader and termed him as England's best skipper till date. But should Morgan decide to quit captaincy, then Buttler is the man as per Strauss.
'Jos is the man if there is a vacancy'
"I think Jos is an outstanding cricketer and outstanding person. He reads the game very well. So if there is a vacancy, he is going to be a very strong candidate," said Strauss.
